The undersigned natural person(s) of the age of eighteen years or more for the purpose of forming a corporation under the Nonprofit Corporation Law of Illinois adopt the following Articles of Incorporation:

  1. The name of the corporation is Americans for a Society Free from Age Restrictions (ASFAR), also known as ASFAR Youth Liberation.
  2. This corporation is a nonprofit public benefit corporation organized and operated for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
  3. This corporation is a nonprofit public benefit corporation and no part of the net income or assets of this corporation shall ever inure to the benefit of any officer, director, or member of the corporation or to any private person, except that the corporation may pay reasonable compensation to its officers, employees and contractors for services rendered to the corporation.
  4. No substantial part of the activities of this corporation shall consist of carrying on propaganda, or otherwise attempting to influence legislation, and the corporation shall not intervene (including the publication or distribution of statements) on behalf of, in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office. This provision shall not be construed to prohibit the corporation from engaging in neutral, non-partisan voter education activities.
  5. The specific and primary purpose of ASFAR is:
    1. To examine social, political, legal and philosophical problems that create barriers to young people's full and equal participation in all areas of public life;
    2. To study potential solutions to the problems listed in (a) above;
    3. To educate the public, the academic community, and lawmakers on the social, political, legal and philosophical issues affecting young people; and
    4. To empower young people to act in defense of their own rights and freedoms and to overcome the barriers created by the problems listed in (a) above, thereby contributing to their citizenship and status as Americans.

  8. The corporation shall have one class of members.
  9. Upon the dissolution or winding up of the corporation, its assets remaining after payment, or provision for payment, of the debts and liabilities of the corporation shall be distributed to the National Center for Youth Law, or if that corporation does not exist or enjoy tax-exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), then to a nonprofit corporation, trust, fund, or foundation which has established its tax-exempt status under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3).
